2024's Longest-Range Electric Cars: A Comparative Guide

One of the most critical criteria when buying an electric car is range. In this guide, we compare the WLTP data, charging times, and price/range ratios of the longest-range electric cars as of 2024, and explain how range changes under real-world usage conditions.

Range Leaders: Comparison with WLTP Data

The range king of 2024 is the Lucid Air Grand Touring. Its WLTP range goes up to 960 km, with combined consumption of 13.5 kWh/100 km and a 117 kWh nominal battery. This model delivers a performance crowned with a Guinness World Record; on the EPA cycle it offers a range of 516 miles (~830 km), making it the vehicle with the longest EPA range on the market as of 2024.

In the luxury segment, the Mercedes EQSstands out with a WLTP range of up to 784 km and a 115 kWh battery; DC fast charging from 10% to 80% takes about 30 minutes. The Lucid Air, with its ~924 V architecture and ~300 kW peak charging power, usually completes its 10-80% charge in under 20 minutes.

Among the first 10 long-range electric vehicles sold in Turkey, there are 3 models from BMW, 2 from Mercedes, 2 from Porsche, and 1 from Audi — meaning long range is not the exclusive domain of the ultra-luxury segment.

The Difference Between WLTP and Real Range

WLTP values are measured under laboratory conditions; real-world road performance is usually lower. Independent sources like ev-database continuously update real-life data. According to THAD's 2025 report, only 1 of the tested vehicles achieved its real range above the stated value; 5 vehicles fell between 90% and 97.3% of the official value, and 7 vehicles between 80% and 89.8%. Edmunds' independent EV range test also systematically compares manufacturer figures with real driving results.

Independent tests show the importance of not making WLTP values the sole basis of a purchase decision; for real range, looking at independent measurements is the safest approach.

Range Changes in Winter and Summer Conditions

Cold weather affects battery efficiency and the need for cabin heating, reducing range. Measurements from various sources are as follows:

  • Recurrent Auto (USA): At 0°C, EVs retain an average of 78% of their maximum range; the best models are around 88%, the worst around 69%.
  • AAA study: At -7°C, a 39.0% drop in range was measured.
  • Ekoenergetyka data: Compared to 18°C, range drops by about 25% at ~4°C.
  • Heat pump difference: In winter range loss, a heat pump-equipped vehicle showed ~13% loss versus ~21% for one without (comparison with the same vehicle).
  • In general real-world tests, a 20-40% range loss in cold weather is considered typical.

A winter test conducted in Norway's freezing conditions with 24 EVs also found major gaps between WLTP claims and real-world performance. Therefore, when making a purchase decision, it is important to evaluate equipment such as a heat pump according to the climate zone you live in.

Charging Speeds: 800 V Architecture and Fast Charging

Charging speed is as decisive as range for long-distance use. Vehicles with 800 V architecture are among the fastest chargers: the Hyundai Ioniq 5 can reach 350 kW peak power, while the Ioniq 6 offers 235 kW. According to Consumer Reports data, some models add 200 miles (~320 km) of range in 20 minutes, while others require more than 1 hour to do so. The fastest-charging vehicles can add ~160 km of range per minute.

The DC fast-charging window is usually measured between 10-80%, and this time varies from 15 to 31 minutes depending on the model. The Edmunds/P3 methodology measures peak power within the 10-80% window to eliminate the ambiguity in the definition of "fastest charging." Level 2 charging, used at home or at work, fills a BEV from empty to 80% in 4-10 hours.

Price/Range Ratio: Budget-Friendly Options

Range alone is not enough; the amount you pay per kilometer is also critical. Notable examples in the US market:

  • Nissan Leaf S+: 303 miles of EPA range, $29,990 list price; at ~$99 per mile, one of the strongest range-value scores.
  • Chevrolet Equinox EV LT1 FWD: At ~$33,600, one of the lowest-priced long-range EVs.
  • A 2024 Reddit analysis: the Bolt EV is the cheapest option at $19,995 / 259 miles, at $77 per mile; the Equinox EV is second at $27,495 / 319 miles.

In Turkey, price/range comparisons are made especially for models in the 1.4-1.9 million TL band, along with real-world range tests. The Togg T10X long-range version, with 523 km of WLTP range, constitutes an important reference in this segment. On the operating cost side, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range offers a low-cost example of ~1.59 pence per mile with cheap-tariff charging.

Which Model Is Right for You?

Answer three questions when making your decision:

  • Daily use: A 400-500 km range band is enough for most users for city use; for long journeys, WLTP range above 600 km and fast-charging capability provide comfort.
  • Climate: For those living in cold regions, a heat pump and winter performance tests come first; factor a 20-40% winter range loss into your planning.
  • Budget: Evaluate the price/range ratio and charging cost together rather than the list price; compare independent test results (ev-database, Edmunds, THAD) with manufacturer data.

Conclusion

In 2024, the Lucid Air Grand Touring tops the chart with 960 km of WLTP range; models like the Mercedes EQS, Tesla Model S/X and Togg T10X offer strong alternatives in different segments.
