Autonomous Driving Technologies in Electric Cars: 2026 Status Analysis

When buying an electric car, terms like "autonomous driving", "driver assistance system" or "semi-autonomous" in hardware lists are now commonplace. So how many of these systems actually work, and how many are just marketing language? On this page, we examine in plain language the autonomous driving levels offered in electric cars as of 2026, the systems of major manufacturers, and the real limits of the technology.

What Is Autonomous Driving and What Do the Levels Mean?

Autonomous driving means the vehicle perceiving its surroundings and making decisions and moving without human intervention. At the core of these systems lie artificial intelligence, deep learning and machine learning. Behind the Scenes of the System: Sensors and Computing

There are four main sensor types that enable a vehicle to "see": lidar, which creates a 3D map of the surroundings lidar, radar, which measures distance and speed even in bad weather radar, cameras, which recognize road signs and pedestrians cameras and ultrasonic sensors, which operate at close range and in parking scenarios ultrasonic sensors. These are accompanied by HD maps, GPS, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication (V2V/V2I) and in-vehicle computers with high processing power that process sensor data.   • Level 3 legal permits are limited by country; they are not valid everywhere.
  • Level 4 operates only in specific areas, and heavy rain, snow, or fog can reduce sensor performance.
  • Autonomous systems can be improved through OTA (over-the-air) updates; today's capabilities are not a fixed benchmark.

Another frequent misconception is that all autonomous vehicles are electric. In fact, these systems can also be applied to internal combustion vehicles; electric ones are preferred simply because they offer a more efficient and quieter platform.

Regardless of the level of automation, if the person sitting in the vehicle remains responsible for the system, that vehicle does not "drive itself".

Advantages and Controversial Issues

The benefits cited by advocates include a reduction in accidents caused by human error, energy efficiency, comfort, and accessibility for elderly and disabled individuals. On the other hand, serious questions remain: When an accident occurs, whether liability lies with the manufacturer or the driver is not yet clear. Sensor performance loss in harsh weather conditions, cybersecurity and data privacy risks, ethical dilemmas in deadly decision scenarios, and the future of professions such as taxi driving and trucking continue to be debated. High cost is also one of the main factors slowing the technology's spread.

The Situation from Turkey's Perspective

To be honest: there is not yet reliable up-to-date data on the legal status of autonomous driving in Turkey, model and price information specific to our country, or ADAS usage rates; this topic requires separate research. The general framework is this: Level 1 and Level 2 driver-assistance systems are offered in hardware packages on many electric models sold in Turkey, but as everywhere else, these systems require the driver's constant attention. Legal permits for Level 3 are limited by country; you need to confirm its validity in our country with the manufacturer's official information before purchasing.

Conclusion

2026 is a clear threshold year for autonomous driving: Level 2 is becoming standard in many electric vehicles, Level 3 regulatory approvals are expanding, and Level 4 driverless taxi services are part of daily life in certain cities. But full autonomy — Level 5 — is still 10-15 years on the horizon. When shopping, matching the "autonomous" claims on the hardware list to SAE levels is the most reliable way to understand what you are and aren't getting.
