Electric or Hybrid Car? The 2025 Buyer's Guide

If you have decided to buy a new car, you face two strong options in the 2025 Turkish market: fully electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrids. Both have advantages in their own scenario; the right choice largely depends on your driving habits, charging opportunities, and budget. In this guide, we compare both technologies in terms of purchase cost, running expenses, range, and maintenance, touch on current models, and offer a practical decision tree to help you make the right decision.

Basic Concepts: BEV and Hybrid

BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) runs only on an electric motor and gets its energy from the battery. Hybrid vehicles, on the other hand, combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. The main headings that stand out in the comparison: range, charging infrastructure, battery life, maintenance costs, total cost of ownership (TCO), warranty coverage, service network, and depreciation (Haberpatronu).

Cost Comparison: Starting Price and TCO

The total cost of ownership (TCO) is examined under three main headings: purchase cost, operating cost, and incentives. A typical TCO calculation is made over a 5-7 year period and includes the following items:

  • Purchase cost and energy expense (kWh of electricity for BEVs, fuel for hybrids)
  • Maintenance/service and insurance expenses
  • Taxes, incentives, and charging infrastructure installation/usage costs
  • Depreciation, battery warranty, and software updates

The starting purchase price of electric vehicles may be higher; however, the cost of electricity is lower and more predictable compared to fuel costs. The starting cost of hybrid models is generally more affordable; fuel savings in city driving become noticeable when the engine-battery balance is well established.

While a driver covering 50-60 km per day can keep costs low with home charging, the accessibility of fast charging infrastructure on long journeys can change the TCO picture.

In Turkey, the tax advantage for hybrid models may remain limited; however, second-hand depreciation and maintenance costs can present a balanced picture.

Range, Charging, and Usage Scenarios

While BEVs are extremely suitable for city use, they depend on fast charging infrastructure on long roads. Hybrids provide flexibility on long journeys and variable driving conditions. In terms of driving experience, instant torque and silence stand out in BEVs, while the traditional driving feel stands out in hybrids. Practical summary:

  • If you have safe charging facilities at home or at work and city driving is frequent BEV is advantageous
  • If home charging is limited or you frequently drive on highways hybrid may be more sensible

Maintenance and Reliability

BEVs have few moving parts; this lowers maintenance costs, but battery cost is a significant item. In hybrids, the energy management system is complex; therefore, warranty coverage and service network are critical selection criteria.

Prominent Electric Models in the 2025 Turkish Market

As of April 2025, some electric models on sale in Turkey and their estimated starting prices are as follows (Car Reviews):

  • TOGG T10X (Long Range RWD): ~523 km WLTP range, ~88.5 kWh battery, ~30 min DC charging, estimated price starting from ~1,500,000 TL. Pros: domestic production and potential to benefit from government incentives; con: being a new brand and the service network still expanding.
  • Hyundai IONIQ 6: ~614 km WLTP range, DC charging in ~18 min (350 kW, 800V), estimated price starting from ~1,800,000 TL.
  • Tesla Model 3 Highland: ~550 km WLTP range, ~30 min Supercharger charging, estimated price starting from ~2,100,000 TL.
  • BMW i5 (eDrive40): ~500 km WLTP range, ~30 min DC charging (205 kW), estimated price starting from ~3,200,000 TL.
  • Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan: ~700 km WLTP range, Hyperscreen and rear-axle steering, estimated price starting from ~4,500,000 TL.

Other estimated prices: Audi Q4 e-tron ~2,800,000 TL+, Volvo EX30 ~1,700,000 TL+, MG ZS EV ~1,300,000 TL+. In addition, hibritelektrik.com platforms offer the ability to compare electric vehicles sold in Turkey in terms of range, battery, price, and charging time.

Taxes and Incentives

In 2025, the Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) brackets, VAT practices, domestic production incentives, charging station installation support, and tax exemptions were restructured. As of September 2025, the number of electric vehicles registered for traffic in Turkey exceeded 320,000; this shows the market is growing steadily. Prices may be affected by exchange rates and tax policies; follow official channels for up-to-date information.

Decision Tree: Which One Is Right for You?

By following the steps below, you can make the decision that suits your own scenario:

  • 1. What is your daily driving distance? If you are below a threshold like 40-60 km per day and your usage is predominantly urban, go for a BEV.
  • 2. Do you have charging facilities at home or at work? If you do, you can fully benefit from the BEV's low energy costs; if not, a hybrid may be more practical.
  • 3. Do you take frequent long trips? Frequent highway use and limited fast-charging access are strong indicators in favor of a hybrid.
  • 4. Calculate your budget with a 5-7 year TCO: Including purchase price, energy, maintenance, insurance, taxes/incentives, depreciation, and battery warranty.
  • 5. Check incentive and warranty conditions: Compare the incentive potential in domestic production models in particular with battery warranty coverage.

Conclusion

There is no "definitively correct" answer between electric and hybrid vehicles; the right question is which vehicle fits your lifestyle. For a user with home charging facilities who drives mostly within the city, a BEV offers low and predictable operating costs. On long journeys and in regions with weak charging infrastructure, the flexibility of a hybrid is valuable. In the coming period, while battery efficiency is expected to increase, costs to decrease, and charging infrastructure to become widespread, hybrids are also projected to play a "bridge" role in the transition to clean energy goals.
